Gillmor Gang 04.25.08

April 25th, 2008

The Gillmor Gang - Marc Canter, Dan Farber, Dana Gardner, Mike Arrington, Robert Scoble, and Robert W. Anderson - drills Microsoft’s David Treadwell on the Live Mesh platform announcements at Web 2.0 Expo. Recorded Friday, April 25, 2008.

[13:22] <@theagent> It's OFFICIAL Gillmor Gang simulcast LIVE today
03[13:22] * theagent changes topic to 'Gillmor Gang Live Simulcast http://ustream.tv/channel/techaura -- Today at 10:45 PST '
[13:31] <+Jari_Ra> Ok, simulcast is today earlier than usual...
[13:43] <+jromeh> nice, jerry!
[13:48] <ustreamer-98639> heehe
[13:49] <+human2> morn...
[13:49] <+human2> I'm on a conf. call.
[13:49] <@afk_BankaiNetworks> Morning Human2
03[13:50] * afk_BankaiNetworks is now known as BankaiNetworks
[13:51] <@TinaGillmor> dan farber talking
[13:51] <@TinaGillmor> nice photo
[13:52] <+human2> good work Jer....
[13:55] <+jromeh> sound is steady now, was a bit choppy at start
[13:56] <@TinaGillmor> really nice sound
[13:57] <+kr8tr> O got my Mesh invite last night.  Pretty interesting.  I think of Mesh as the "Web OS" container.
[13:59] <+jromeh> all over it like white on iPod
[14:00] <+kr8tr> Was VC still up in "Green" tech?
[14:04] <+rickmurtagh> how is mesh different from groove or office live?
[14:04] <+kr8tr> Mesh is a container for the Web Operating System
[14:06] <@TinaGillmor> others may want to tweet the stream url
[14:06] <+kr8tr> Imagine if the Live Mesh View became the only computer view you cared about... on any system, at any time.
[14:07] <@TinaGillmor> wow now we have supers? Nice work Jer
[14:07] <+kr8tr> This is no longer a "browser-war".  This is a war for the container in which the browser runs.  And Live Mesh is a container.
[14:08] <+Joffi> Cloud War?
[14:08] <+rickmurtagh> more like a mashup of office live, groove, sharepoint, with a system profile like app to bring it all together?
[14:08] <+rickmurtagh> on any machine?
[14:09] <+kr8tr> there are just things you can't do in a browser.  You need more direct access to the hardware.  You need an application in which you run your "cloud". - the container (Mesh)
[14:11] <ustreamer-98639> you would be missing a huge market unless you work this out
[14:11] <@TinaGillmor> Rickmurtagh I'm now following you on twitter
[14:13] <+kr8tr> Mesh initially wonn't care what Operating System it runs on - but eventually becomes the Operating System - as more and more functionality moves from the underlying OS into the "container".
[14:14] <@TinaGillmor> Arrington just joined the call
[14:15] <+gruts> Hello from the UK. Missed the start of the show. How can I possibly be taking live pictures like this for granted? Amazing.
[14:16] <@TinaGillmor> Hi Gruts
[14:17] <+dahowlett> Gr8 to see Mikey in top form
[14:17] <+rickmurtagh> like a HAL layer for any hardwre then? w the sharing/sync features of group sharing apps?
[14:17] <+kr8tr> The runtime can be written in anything though
[14:18] <+rickmurtagh> mesh web page does nto offer much of an explanation for differeniating it from other group apps
[14:18] <+kr8tr> (or re-written in anything, to be precise)
[14:18] <+rickmurtagh> api/developer based then?
[14:19] <+kr8tr> @rickmurtagh - it certainly looks that way
[14:23] <ustreamer-98639> well said!
[14:24] <+rickmurtagh> silverlight hates firefox?
[14:24] <ustreamer-98639> true
[14:26] <+rickmurtagh> omg - who did the mesh tour?  zzzzzzzzz
[14:26] <+dahowlett> This is hilarious stuff
[14:26] <ustreamer-98639> yes
[14:26] <ustreamer-98639> move on Gang
[14:27] <+kr8tr> 12What we have done so dar is to NOT let MS explain what Mesh is.
[14:28] <+Loudmouthman> Hello , dahowlett, hello everyone else
[14:28] <@TinaGillmor> hello and welcome
[14:29] <+Loudmouthman> haah MS explain MESH the day people fully understand .NET eh ?
[14:29] <+Loudmouthman> So a bit like maybe tcp/ip does then ?
[14:30] <+kr8tr> 12What makes Mesh significatly different from FolderShare?
[14:31] <+rickmurtagh> .NET = Not Entirely Trustworthy - period (peotic liberties applied)
[14:31] <+Loudmouthman> where folders = data ? and devices == computers?
[14:31] <+MissM> I'm sick of the different versions of net competing and not downward compatible
[14:31] <+kr8tr> 12So Mesh = FolderShare + SkyDrive?
[14:31] <+Loudmouthman> didnt Novell do this a few years ago ?
[14:31] <+Loudmouthman> it was a Suse product like iFolder ?
[14:32] <+Loudmouthman> yeah .. its iFodler isnt it?
[14:32] <@BankaiNetworks> Is this service intended to compete against or enhance Google and Amazon Web services?
[14:32] <+Loudmouthman> well spoted kr8tr .
[14:32] <+Joffi> Somebody mentioned Amazon... bout time
[14:33] <+Loudmouthman> the bette question is
[14:33] <+Loudmouthman> the other question is ., XP support longterm vs Vista support for it ?
[14:33] <ustreamer-43974> FUSE
[14:34] <ustreamer-43974> Filesystems in User Space
[14:34] <+Loudmouthman> and will mesh protocol/specs be fully disclosed to enable Mono/net/lamp integration ?
[14:34] <@BankaiNetworks> Thanks Steve! =]
[14:34] <+Loudmouthman> is the plan to remove fileservers from enterprise server farms then ?
[14:35] <+jcposner> will xbox be a mesh client?
[14:35] <+kr8tr> 12@jcposner - I say yes - as well as Zune
[14:35] <+Loudmouthman> Which  is wierd because you cant type "mesh specification" into google and get a result. ?
[14:36] <+Loudmouthman> storage is no longer capacity issue. its become bandwidth and latency.
[14:36] <+kr8tr> 12@LoudMouth - try "Microsoft Live Mesh Specification"
[14:36] <@theagent> So it will push IPv6 forward?
[14:36] <+jcposner> I would be curious as to when the xbox 360 is mesh enabled..is this a 2009 release
[14:37] <ustreamer-98639> IPV6 is 3-4 yrs out
[14:37] <+Loudmouthman> <--- currently searching google for those mesh specs. they are not so easy to find in three searches.
[14:37] <+Loudmouthman> how is mesh really different to ip/tcp then ?
[14:38] <+kr8tr> 12@LoudMouthman - FeedSynch was the first Google hit I got: http://dev.live.com/feedsync/
[14:38] <ustreamer-98639> like there will be a cultural change - come on
[14:38] <+Loudmouthman> @kr8tr , thanks .. my terms were "mesh specification" and "mesh protocol"
[14:38] <+kr8tr> 12there is constant cultural change :)
[14:39] <@BankaiNetworks> I think Microsoft has learned alot from Hotmail.
[14:39] <+kr8tr> 12I've put 1.5 GB on the Mesh since last night. Painlessly.
06[14:40] * +Loudmouthman thinks this is another move for MS away from Desktop Dependency
[14:41] <+Loudmouthman> dear god yes can someone please deliver on data portability without the need to have more press releases ?
[14:41] <+jcposner> can you speak to to data encryption model
[14:42] <ustreamer-98639> another reason for IPV6
[14:42] <ustreamer-43974> oAuth
[14:42] <+kr8tr> 12The problem with IPv6 is that the ISP's arent rolling it out.  My cable modem doesn't support IPv6
[14:43] <@BankaiNetworks> Kinda like Outlook
[14:43] <+kr8tr> 12We don;t call them "actions" here - we call them "gestures" :)
[14:43] <ustreamer-98639> PIR (.org registrar) will start using IPV6 so maybe things will move along faster - although they do have a small marker share its a start
[14:43] <+jcposner> is there a public storage capacity associated with live mesh..ie cloud storage
[14:44] <ustreamer-98639> so its MS version of OpenID?
[14:44] <ustreamer-43974> MESH is FUSE...  that is all it is.  Filesystems in User Space
[14:45] <+MissM> Nice job switching photos, too.
[14:45] <+kr8tr> 12Difference between FUSE and Mesh will be adoption.
[14:45] <+connectedgeek-1> Jerry i like the new way your are producing this today :)
[14:45] <+jcposner> another industry concept is a "services fabric" wonder if he can speak to that term
[14:46] <+Loudmouthman> will we be able to elect to index our data in the mesh to improve SEO ?
[14:47] <+Karoli> the sound on this call is really good also on the video. whatever you're doing keep doing it.
[14:48] <+gruts> New format works for me too. The sound is breaking up a bit. I take it Gillmor has less bandwidth than theagent. Having said that, the quality is perfectly acceptable.
[14:48] <ustreamer-98639> Yahoo = bigger cloud
[14:48] <+rickmurtagh> jerry is not in th video stream because he is sitting there in his boxers
[14:49] <+connectedgeek-1> where is did Steve go?
[14:49] <+connectedgeek-1> oh
[14:49] <+connectedgeek-1> cool
[14:49] <+connectedgeek-1> good idea
[14:50] <+kr8tr> 12Your profile is everything returned about you on a Google search :)
[14:51] <+rickmurtagh> liveID info sounds like - since it uses that as a login
[14:51] <ustreamer-98639> MS market is enterprise and Yahoo has a better Saas model ?
[14:52] <+kr8tr> 12Mike is saying what I just said :)
[14:52] <+jcposner> profile pattern recognition..needs to be intelligence around profiles
[14:53] <+jcposner> missing the live mesh tie-in how does live mesh aggregage profile meta data
[14:54] <ustreamer-43974> context, content, indentity, social graph, attention, gestures
[14:55] <+jcposner> fragmentation problem
[14:55] <+jcposner> friendfeed aggregates but not smart aggregation
[14:56] <ustreamer-43974> aggregation with noise reduction
[14:58] <+gruts> Call me old-fashioned, but isn't the solution to what they're talking about a personal website?
[14:59] <+gruts> Tina's on telly!
[14:59] <+jcposner> if it can be automatically generated and updated, that would work for me
[14:59] <ustreamer-43974> federation has been something needed for a long long time
[14:59] <+jcposner> also interested in how the semantic web model fits into this discussion
[15:00] <@TinaGillmor> wow our internet connection went down. We're back now!
[15:00] <@TinaGillmor> freaked me out
[15:03] <ustreamer-2514> POTS saves the day
[15:04] <ustreamer-2514> 5th "super"
[15:05] <ustreamer-43974> MESH smacks of Marimba Castinets... where is Kim Polese?
[15:06] <+jcposner> is the enterprise adoption expected to be much slow than the consumer..or is enterprise usage built into the design
[15:06] <ustreamer-2514> Kim drove SpikeSource into the ground
[15:06] <+kr8tr> 12Thanks, David
[15:06] <+dahowlett> Gr8 show - thanks Steve
[15:06] <ustreamer-2514> 6th "super"
[15:07] <+jcposner> I'll take an invite Steve if you get extras

[15:07] <+gruts> Seriously impressed.
[15:08] <+Joffi> production of this live thing keeps getting better
[15:08] <@stevegillmor> Jerry you rock as usual
[15:08] <@TinaGillmor> thanks to everybody - especially Jerry -- for making this show terrific
[15:08] <@theagent> thanks.. trying to make it better
[15:09] <@theagent> still limited by the software... but it will get better
[15:09] <@stevegillmor> succeeding
[15:09] <+gruts> I think I just witnessed history being made.
[15:09] <+jromeh> was about to hit enter on "and succeeding" but got beat to it by the man himself
[15:09] <@TinaGillmor> new painting behind you   - your studio is full of beautiful surprises
[15:10] <@theagent> that one is called "Boy"
[15:10] <ustreamer-33494> Really like the faces. Need it as a video podcast for the road. But I'll listen live when I can to get this added dimension
[15:10] <+jromeh> nice
[15:11] <@TinaGillmor> really gorgeous up close too
[15:11] <@TinaGillmor> Gruts glad you could make it
[15:11] <@theagent> thanks... I'll relay that to my wife
[15:12] <@TinaGillmor> I'd love to buy a piece someday. I'll just have to enjoy them virtually until then
[15:13] <+connectedgeek-1> i liked the pictures of the peeps that were speaking
[15:13] <@theagent> I can make something happen ;-)
[15:13] <+connectedgeek-1> made it more interactive
[15:13] <@theagent> thanks for all the feedback everyone.  I appreciate the support
[15:14] <@TinaGillmor> Jerry - I'll work on getting more photos to use. seems like we probably have personal pics of many of tthe Gillmor gang members
[15:15] <@theagent> yeah... I need to spend some time getting things properly setup for slugs and stuff...
[15:15] <@stevegillmor-1> if she sends you the one of my on the toilet it's trouble
[15:15] <@theagent> lol
[15:15] <@theagent> does it include a bag of cheetos?
[15:15] <@TinaGillmor> Oh I forgot about that one!
[15:15] <@TinaGillmor> no, it includes a laptop
[15:16] <@theagent> I actually had a demand in my divorce paperwork for the relinquishing of a similar picture
[15:16] <@TinaGillmor> hmmm
