032009/01/05 [15:40] * theagent changes topic to 'NewsGang Live at 1pm PDT.... anyone can call in at 218-936-6581 with pin # 1804 today'
2009/01/05 [15:56] <+iPlant> aa.. good tunes gone..
2009/01/05 [15:57] <@theagent> sorry.. getting ready for call
2009/01/05 [16:01] <@theagent> can someone say something on the call please?
2009/01/05 [16:03] <+healthguru> hearing dial tones
2009/01/05 [16:03] <@theagent> hang in there.. something borked again
2009/01/05 [16:04] <+kevinmarks> i can hear steve on the call
2009/01/05 [16:04] <@theagent> talking about the stream issues
2009/01/05 [16:04] <+kevinmarks> are you dialled in, jerry?
2009/01/05 [16:04] <+iPlant> no sound here
2009/01/05 [16:04] <ustreamer-81645> you've got a pretty bad echo on whatever you were on, kevin
2009/01/05 [16:05] <+shareme> no sound
2009/01/05 [16:05] <@theagent> I'm not getting call audio on my end.. I get into the bridge but once connected not getting audio
2009/01/05 [16:05] <@TinaGillmor> hmmm
2009/01/05 [16:06] <@TinaGillmor> Jerry.... maybe call in withe the guest pin
2009/01/05 [16:06] <@TinaGillmor> call is happening
2009/01/05 [16:07] <+Karoli> is something muted that shouldn't be?
2009/01/05 [16:07] <@TinaGillmor> sound coming up
2009/01/05 [16:07] <@theagent> wtf?
2009/01/05 [16:08] <+healthguru> lol
2009/01/05 [16:08] <@TinaGillmor> hmm
2009/01/05 [16:08] <@theagent> I get all the command prompts and then when it connects me to the call I get /dev/null
2009/01/05 [16:09] <+hardaway> I am in the chat while in a meeting
2009/01/05 [16:10] <@TinaGillmor> some beeps areleaking through
2009/01/05 [16:10] <@TinaGillmor> to the call
2009/01/05 [16:10] <@TinaGillmor> not sure how
2009/01/05 [16:10] <+kshep> we hear somebody calling int to calliflower on the call. weird
2009/01/05 [16:10] <+Karoli> are you getting audio now?
2009/01/05 [16:10] <+shareme> nope
2009/01/05 [16:10] <+RHirsch> I was afraid there was going to be crazy feedback
2009/01/05 [16:11] <@theagent> ok.. sorry folks but something is totally borked on my end regarding the call.
2009/01/05 [16:11] <@theagent> I would suggest dialing directly into the conference bridge which can be found in the topic
2009/01/05 [16:11] <@theagent> I will try to figure out what has gone wrong
2009/01/05 [16:12] <@TinaGillmor> ok Jerry... if there is anything you can do
2009/01/05 [16:15] <@theagent> stream is up
2009/01/05 [16:15] <+healthguru> why not skype the audio call in?
2009/01/05 [16:15] <ustreamer-42049> we have audio
2009/01/05 [16:15] <@theagent> you can call in directly to the audio bridge using Skype but with Skype dial out
2009/01/05 [16:15] <ustreamer-42049> thanks jerry
2009/01/05 [16:16] <+healthguru> got audio
2009/01/05 [16:18] <@TinaGillmor> thanks Jerry
2009/01/05 [16:19] <@theagent> sometimes VoIP and SIP are still in need of vodoo canatations to work properly
2009/01/05 [16:20] <+Karoli> glad your incantations worked, Jerry :)
2009/01/05 [16:20] <+jcposner> publish/subscribe model seems to value assured delivery over real time delivery
2009/01/05 [16:21] <+jcposner> I wonder if the latency is in the pub/sub engine
2009/01/05 [16:21] <+jcposner> there are low latency pub/sub engines
2009/01/05 [16:21] <+jcposner> MQ
2009/01/05 [16:22] <+hardaway> We all have workarounds for this.
2009/01/05 [16:23] <+Karoli> it's obviously a feedburner problem because twitter is pinged and posted within seconds
2009/01/05 [16:23] <@theagent> now that the stream is running.. please tweet the url. http://ustream.tv/channel/newsgang-live
2009/01/05 [16:25] <+Karoli> sent out to twitter
2009/01/05 [16:27] <+hardaway> Exactly. My blog goes to Twitter before I even finish it somethings:-)
2009/01/05 [16:28] <+healthguru> ditto on the tweet
2009/01/05 [16:28] <+Karoli> feedburner has sucked for me for a looong time. I changed the pingserver pointer
2009/01/05 [16:28] <+Karoli> still takes 3-4 hours to hit google reader
2009/01/05 [16:29] <+jcposner> delivering millions of feeds in real time requires significant infrasture cost, you pay for real time
2009/01/05 [16:29] <+Karoli> jcposner I have two feed subs to my own blog. one is feedburner, one is just the blog feed itself.
2009/01/05 [16:30] <+Karoli> the blog feed itself appears in google reader w/in 5 minutes
2009/01/05 [16:30] <@theagent> GNIP is all talk with little substance
2009/01/05 [16:30] <+Karoli> feedburner feed is 3 hours
2009/01/05 [16:30] <+Karoli> seems a little weird to me that the big company is the one with delivery...
2009/01/05 [16:30] <+Karoli> delivery issues.
2009/01/05 [16:31] <+Karoli> is it the analytics that slows the feed?
2009/01/05 [16:31] <+hardaway> I have the same issue.
2009/01/05 [16:31] <+jcposner> sounds like they have not migrated feedburner over to the big iron
2009/01/05 [16:31] <@theagent> need food... afk for 10 minutes
2009/01/05 [16:32] <+jcposner> migration can be painful..seem as if 3 hours has been deemed good enough vs. the migration headache
2009/01/05 [16:35] <+kshep> feedburner may just have fallen into the Jaiku hole
2009/01/05 [16:37] <@TinaGillmor> did we loose Steve and gain a child?
2009/01/05 [16:39] <+aronski> Can people on some network have a real time exchange of ideas where you don't have time for a shower in between each response? The speed is pretty <censored> important when you are flogging an idea...
2009/01/05 [16:40] <+aronski> The stability of the filtering systems is extremely important, especially for mobile users...
2009/01/05 [16:40] <+hardaway> That's important for idea floggers, Aronski, but sometimes I like a little time to shower
2009/01/05 [16:40] <+aronski> This isn't chess by mail.
2009/01/05 [16:41] <+hardaway> No, but real time isn't necessary for everything. Maybe there are two kinds of conversations
2009/01/05 [16:42] <+aronski> Hygene is really important Francine but having too much time to ponder an ill typed statement can change the direction of the conversation for ill.
2009/01/05 [16:42] <+Karoli> here's what is happening: twitter is replacing google reader.
2009/01/05 [16:42] <+Karoli> by the time it gets to the rss reader I've read it three times on twitter
2009/01/05 [16:42] <+aronski> But twitter SHOULD replace IM.
2009/01/05 [16:42] <+kshep> I want the ability to post something directly into Google Reader
2009/01/05 [16:42] <+kshep> push
2009/01/05 [16:42] <+hardaway> Sometimes. Not all the time. I don't click through on everything in Twitter. No time. I read the feeds in a batch at night or early AM
2009/01/05 [16:43] <+Karoli> i figured feedburner was processing feeds according to page rank
2009/01/05 [16:43] <@TinaGillmor> realtime can accomodate lazytime but not the otherway around
2009/01/05 [16:43] <ustreamer-28858> gawd, i personally hate people who use Twitter like IM.
2009/01/05 [16:43] <+kshep> Google Reader needs an API that allows services to post into the stream
2009/01/05 [16:43] <+hardaway> Right kshep. Closest thing to that now is share with a note
2009/01/05 [16:43] <+hardaway> I do that more and more
2009/01/05 [16:44] <+aronski> I look at twitter most times from my mobile. With my laptop with Jabber and Growl, I can see things float up and go away, choosing to engage or not.
2009/01/05 [16:44] <+aronski> OK, for me I like it as IM coming in; restraint is a personal issue as posting goes.
2009/01/05 [16:45] <+Karoli> using twitter as im shouldn't bother anyone since @replies can be ignored in settings
2009/01/05 [16:45] <+aronski> I'm all for getting rid of the worthless crud that jams our screens and, in mobile land, crashes our phones.
2009/01/05 [16:46] <@TinaGillmor> right Karoli
2009/01/05 [16:46] <+jcposner> I think one of the larger points is that once you are given a taste of real time, you begin to expect it from services that can't deliver it
2009/01/05 [16:47] <+WebPixie> feedburner's been around for eons, right?
2009/01/05 [16:47] <+aronski> yes. Once you have been in the middle of an event and are getting input from all sides, you don't really want to watch a static single web cam view with a 15 min. delay.
2009/01/05 [16:48] <+Karoli> jcposner feedburner used to be faster than anything else
2009/01/05 [16:48] <+Karoli> that was the attraction.
2009/01/05 [16:48] <+WebPixie> unless you happen to be in the mood for a 15-sec delay :)
2009/01/05 [16:48] <+hardaway> jcposner that's right
2009/01/05 [16:48] <@TinaGillmor> lost audio?
2009/01/05 [16:48] <ustreamer-66861> hello
2009/01/05 [16:48] <+RonSchott> yup
2009/01/05 [16:48] <@TinaGillmor> everyone else ok?
2009/01/05 [16:48] <+Jari_Ra> i lost sound too
2009/01/05 [16:48] <ustreamer-66861> there is a lag with the audio
2009/01/05 [16:49] <+randy_nacol2002> hi everyone
2009/01/05 [16:49] <@TinaGillmor> Jerry?
2009/01/05 [16:49] <+WebPixie> oh - jerrry!
2009/01/05 [16:49] <+RonSchott> I think Jerry was taking a snack break.
2009/01/05 [16:49] <@theagent> what the hell
2009/01/05 [16:49] <@theagent> working on it
2009/01/05 [16:49] <@theagent> just a sec
2009/01/05 [16:50] <@TinaGillmor> k
2009/01/05 [16:50] <+WebPixie> twitter spy is faster than twhirl here ...same elsewhere?
2009/01/05 [16:50] <@theagent> audio will return in a minute
2009/01/05 [16:51] <+Karoli> holy <censored>, i do have an evil gardener here. he just walked by and set the dog off with the meanest grin
2009/01/05 [16:51] <+aronski> The two points I think I was trying to make is that it quite nice to have a real time input to monitor and then respond to the stream with thought and restraint. RT's are fine but there are some people who seem to cut and paste all day long.
2009/01/05 [16:51] <+WebPixie> even the speed of light has *some* latency, doesn't it?
2009/01/05 [16:52] <+WebPixie> i totally agree with you aronski
2009/01/05 [16:53] <+Karoli> webpixie i can't use twitterspy now that I can't turn off watch_friends
2009/01/05 [16:53] <ustreamer-95529> no sound
2009/01/05 [16:53] <@theagent> working on the sound problem
2009/01/05 [16:53] <+WebPixie> i like what sg said earlier...rt is being able to see what I want to see when I want to see it (paraphrasing)
2009/01/05 [16:53] <@theagent> just a sec
2009/01/05 [16:54] <+WebPixie> is feedburner Google's?
2009/01/05 [16:54] <+RonSchott> yes
2009/01/05 [16:54] <+WebPixie> you can't turn off watch_friends, karoli?
2009/01/05 [16:55] <+Karoli> no, it won't turn off
2009/01/05 [16:55] <+WebPixie> that's what i told rb a few last night
2009/01/05 [16:56] <+WebPixie> ccit?
2009/01/05 [16:56] <+aronski> RT is the viral aspect... you unfortuately spread food poisoning and the plague the same way. If a hot news item or a brilliant quote come along, neat. But some things are better left unshared, like scabies.
2009/01/05 [16:56] <+Karoli> @aronski lol, thank you for that imagery
2009/01/05 [16:57] <+WebPixie> whoa! that it HORRIBLE latency...2-3 hrs!
2009/01/05 [16:57] <+jcposner> I wonder how much latency is built into the compute stack and if you want to design real time systems then you begin with real time operating systems (RTOS)
2009/01/05 [16:58] <ustreamer-573> is the sound back for anyone?
2009/01/05 [16:58] <+jcposner> not here
2009/01/05 [16:58] <+RonSchott> nope
2009/01/05 [16:58] <+WebPixie> What's ccit?
2009/01/05 [16:58] <+randy_nacol2002> not here
2009/01/05 [16:58] <+Karoli> techcrunchit
2009/01/05 [16:58] <+dougcoleman> I'm not hearing anything
2009/01/05 [16:58] <@TinaGillmor> not here either
2009/01/05 [16:59] <ustreamer-573> no big deal... I'll listen to the recording later
2009/01/05 [16:59] <@theagent> hold on... major screw up on the VoIP connection trying to reset now
2009/01/05 [16:59] <@TinaGillmor> ccit is probably TCIT
2009/01/05 [16:59] <+dougcoleman> I thought I was late to the party or something
2009/01/05 [16:59] <+healthguru> yup, no sound...incantation time again...
2009/01/05 [16:59] <+WebPixie> oh ...no wonder my brain kept pulling up blank space!
2009/01/05 [16:59] <@TinaGillmor> no we just lost the stream
2009/01/05 [17:00] <@theagent> yeah.. getting ready to behead a chicken
2009/01/05 [17:00] <+WebPixie> my headset must need to be exchanged for a new one, or something
2009/01/05 [17:00] <@TinaGillmor> poor JErry... thank goodness he's got a good amount of hair
2009/01/05 [17:00] <+RonSchott> Meanwhile here's a thought: Twitter Track = Duke Nukem Forever ?
2009/01/05 [17:00] <+WebPixie> voices on the call are chopping up and stuttering too
2009/01/05 [17:01] <+WebPixie> call the phone number healthguru
2009/01/05 [17:02] <@TinaGillmor> phone number above
2009/01/05 [17:02] <+WebPixie> just don't chop off that chicken head in camera range, jerry
2009/01/05 [17:02] <+randy_nacol2002> we won't want PETA to find out
2009/01/05 [17:02] <+WebPixie> :D
2009/01/05 [17:02] <+randy_nacol2002> ;p
2009/01/05 [17:02] <@theagent> <censored>.. <censored> SIP phone has gone whacko
2009/01/05 [17:02] <+WebPixie> we DO need track back
2009/01/05 [17:03] <@theagent> can't even kill the process
2009/01/05 [17:04] <+RonSchott> I wonder if whenever track comes back our existing tracks will still be viable?
2009/01/05 [17:04] <+WebPixie> now calliflower seems to have died!
2009/01/05 [17:06] <@theagent> I think the only way for me to save this is through a reboot. The chat will stay up but the vid stream will cease...
2009/01/05 [17:06] <@theagent> I'll be back up in about 2 minutes
2009/01/05 [17:07] <+Karoli> just asked whether page rank factored into speed feedburner sends feed
2009/01/05 [17:08] <+Karoli> seems to me that if page rank puts rss feeds into a hierarchy, authority is borked
2009/01/05 [17:09] <+Karoli> will always be the techcrunches and scobles who have an audience if that's true
2009/01/05 [17:09] <+aronski> I have no authority; does that make my tweets irrelevant?
2009/01/05 [17:09] <+Karoli> aronski no. my point is that someone is controlling the flow of my information into the feed stream based
2009/01/05 [17:10] <+Karoli> on their idea of authority
2009/01/05 [17:10] <+Karoli> at least, maybe that's so
2009/01/05 [17:11] <+healthguru> attraction vs promotion perhaps?
2009/01/05 [17:11] <+WebPixie> based on somebody's idea of authority
